Hanging out with the Tudors...

..... Had a really lovely weekend hanging out with the Tudors (by DVD on Sunday!)

My weekend started off with a bit of a shock, I must admit. I woke up at 11.30am on Saturday morning. 11.30am! Crikey! I was so surprised, I rang my parents to double-check the time.

Saturday afternoon was spent shopping and hanging out with Mum.

Sunday was DVD day! I had ordered the Nora Roberts books made into movies on DVD (great Amazon.co.uk sale) and watched "Carolina Moon" and "Blue Smoke" in the morning after lawn-mowing and cleaning my house.

Dad was off to London on Sunday night so Mum and I had a girly night starting with me dying my hair and then both of us putting together some flat-pack furniture Mum had bought. We watched the sequel to "Elizabeth" (called "Elizabeth: The Golden Age") before watching "The Other Boleyn Girl". I love period dramas and I love anything to do with Henry VIII or Elizabeth I!

The costumes in Elizabeth, particularly, were STUNNING!

Other news .... a lady is coming by my parents' barn after work to buy Clive (my old car). She came and had a looksie at him yesterday and loved him and today she's coming back with her mechanic. He checks out (the car that is ... I have NO clue about the mechanic) so I hope she doesn't haggle too much on the price because I'm already giving him away as it is.

And I've had an influx of label orders lately :) which is lovely. Keeping me busy but it's nice to get the extra "pocket money".

This is what annoyed looks like...

When I get out... someone's gonna die....

Summer Cold

I woke up with a summer cold today... (sniff ... cough). Ugh! Thank goodness for cold medication and heaters!

Rendition

Last night I watched a movie called "Rendition" featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon, (both were mesmerising in it).

It is about, well, "rendition" (i.e. handing over prisoners to countries where torture is allowed). It was compelling and powerful. Reminded me of “The Kingdom” in so many ways.

Very powerful acting and a powerful message too. I really recommend it - one of the best movies I have seen in a really long time.

Books I've Read So Far in 2008

Can you believe it's almost July? Six months almost gone from 2008. WOW! I thought I'd have a look at what I've read so far this year. The majority has been easy-reading and books recommended by friends ~ books, might I add, that I would not have read and I would have missed out on some fun stories!

Sarah Addison Allen ~ Garden Spells (I LOVED this book and have already pre-ordered The Sugar Queen also by her)

Patricia Cornwell ~ All That Remains (scary!)

Kate Collins ~ Slay It With Flowers (enjoyable).

Janet Evanovich ~ Plum Lovin', Plum Lucky (I liked this the best of the three) and Fearless Fourteen

Elizabeth Gilbert ~ Eat, Pray, Love (I loved this book and bought it for a friend who also loved it!! Easy to dip in and out of).

Melissa Glazer ~ A Murderous Glaze (one word... painful. That's a day I'll never get back of my life!)

Khaled Hosseini ~ The Kite Runner (brutal, raw and powerful!)

Karen Marie Moning ~ Kiss of the Highlander (enjoyable smut!)

Linda Lael Miller ~ Deadly Gamble and Deadly Deceptions (loved this series and hope there will be more).

Susan Elizabeth Phillips ~ Breathing Room (again, I loved this book!)

James Patterson ~ 1st To Die (subtley chilling).

Nora Roberts ~ Face the Fire (I loved this whole series and in fact want to live on Three Sisters Island ... shame it doesn't actually exist!)

Elaine Viets ~ Shop Till You Drop (quite enjoyable. I bought the second in the series but haven't read it yet).

Lauren Weisberger ~ Chasing Harry Winston (loved, LOVED this book. Laughed out loud in parts).

And what am I reading now? "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer........

All Creatures Great & Small

Eventhough it's nearly the end of June there are still no peachicks (baby Peacocks / Peahens) at work but there are pheasant chicks at Mum and Dad's new Barn.

Aren't they adorable??!! I spotted them for the first time on the weekend. In fact it's a bit of an All Creatures Great and Small blog entry today .... Eventhough there are no peachicks around at work, it hasn't stopped the Peacocks trying to attract the Peahens....

Clearly she's unimpressed!!!

Then I came into work yesterday to find heaps of bunny rabbits on the lawn! They were all basking in the sun and only scarpered when more and more cars arrived at work. Cute, cute, cute!

I love birds and especially having birds in my yard. On the weekend, I spotted a row of these birds on my Mum and Dad's back fence. I hadn't seen them before so like a true Twitcher, I looked in my bird book but I can't identify them. Perhaps from the "Flycatcher" family?

Staying in the now...

I got an email from Cheryl Richardson (she's sometimes on Oprah) and I clicked on the link to get "a touch of Grace". The twinkling star I picked lead me to the PRESENCE CARD with the reading ...

I have a BIG problem in staying in the now. I am always in yesterday or tomorrow - eventhough I know how redundant it is to be there. I guess I need to work out HOW to stay in the NOW.

Rules for Living ...

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION:

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it.. don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruit and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain . Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.. If you have two bodies , your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise programme?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good !

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING !!! ... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO!!! Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember: 'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOW what a ride!'

This is a specially formulated diet designed to help WOMEN cope with the stress that builds during the day

Weekend in Brussels

Jo, Marleen and me in front of the Atomium

The Grand-Place

The Grand-Place from another angle

The Western Shop in Brussels!

The famous "Pissing Boy"

Since it’s Friday and it’s already been a chaotic morning (I came into to find the alarm blaring … and no one knows the code!!!) I thought I would FINALLY share some pictures I took of our fun and fantastic weekend in Brussels.

Fun
and fantastic is a pretty good way to describe it. I had never been to Brussels before and I really liked it. It’s unlike anywhere I’ve been before … that, or it’s like a lot of places I’ve been before but all put in one spot. It’s very contemporary, Parisian, stark ….. everything! My head was on a constant swivel! I’m used to places being “one style” so it was mind-blowing (to some extent) to see everything so different …. on the same street, in the city, in the countryside. It was really innovative that way! And I loved it.

I arrived first (by plane) and Marleen took me straight to her apartment which is lovely. She’s done a fantastic job decorating it and also making it feel welcoming. We say this everytime we get together, but it’s always really nice to SEE someone’s home and neighbourhood. You can visualise it so much better when emailing etc. She gave me the tour and it wasn’t long before we drove into the belly of the beast (Brussels) and picked up Jo.

Well as you can imagine when the three of us get together … trouble and laughter soon followed.

Firstly we were waiting in the arrival area for the EuroStar and despite Jo’s train having arrived, no Jo….. that’s when we found out they came in on a different platform. Off we rushed … but we couldn’t find Jo and she couldn’t find us. Thank goodness for mobile ‘phones. We were trying to navigate towards one another with “orange pillars” the only prominent feature Jo could see. Well I saw the pillars and Jo but she still couldn’t see us so despite saying (like a pantomime) BEEEEEEHIND YOU, poor Jo kept turning around in circles …. It was hilarious.

Two minutes later it was like the three stooges again as we tried to enter the car park. (I tell you if you see three familiar faces pressing buttons and talking into an intercom on “Brussels Funniest Home Videos”, it will be best to look away….)

I also discovered a new talent during my weekend in Brussels. My ability to find Marleen’s car anywhere, anytime. It started at the airport... eventhough I had not actually seen Marleen’s car before (apart from in pictures). I wonder if I can go on the road with this new gift?!!!

Marleen had put together a really fun itinerary cramming in as much as possible and as well as seeing Brussels (on a guided tour), we also got to see Marleen’s work (one word …. P-O-S-H!). We sniggered and giggled as we tried to look “professional” walking through the foyer (we didn’t want to get Marleen in trouble) and I was delighted to meet some of her colleagues, namely Bob Trainor (his wife worked on the Hillary campaign) and Irish Brian who recommended a book to Marleen who in turn recommended it to me. Her desk is lovely too and it feels like a really lovely place to work (in fact I declared I wanted to work there when I move to Brussels!) We also got to see Marleen’s parents apartment and can I just say this about her parents – ADORABLE!!! They had pink champagne chilled and ready for us …. And it’s best to mention here what lightweights Jo and I are as we got giggly then sleepy afterwards!! They live in a lovely apartment with a gorgeous view of a walking park. We also got to meet Anita and Eddie there.

We also got to visit Erik and Nadia and the boys. They live in an absolutely beautiful part of Belgium – so scenic and gorgeous. (It’s famous for stilt walking). This was one of my favourite parts of the trip. Their home is fantastic – very Scandinavian in design and their garden was awesome. They have chickens (COOL) and grow their own nuts (walnuts), fruit and vege. Erik had done all the hard landscaping (decking and so forth) and it was really professionally done.

Speaking of Erik, he looked SO WELL (despite being in his 30s, 2.5 years ago he had a stroke). Their English was impeccable as well. Nadia was about to start a new job in Gent on Monday and Erik starts at the library in October. Nadia had also put on a really lovely spread – cold meats, garlic breads, olives, cheese etc. It was so sweet and thoughtful of them to open their home and welcome us so warmly. I couldn’t help but think the whole time what a remarkable woman Nadia was. Not only was she so friendly and funny with us but everything she had gone through with Erik and having two small boys to also look after.

And of course to top it all off was the Bon Jovi concert. Marleen got us fantastic seats …. Oh and when we entered the Stadium gates, they have a CD booklet filled with facts on Bon Jovi and a bag of sweets – THIS IS MY KIND OF TOWN! The stadium was massive and the opening act was a Flemish Band (Euro Punk) called Nailpin. This quiet, tranquil looking (and not to mention, cute) lead singer would stand there and suddenly go off on one. I wish I could describe adequately how his legs and arms went akimbo and in every single direction at once. It brought a laugh every time! Despite being Euro Punk, it was quite good and I am getting a copy of the CD from Marleen.

Their bass player was getting married that day so they did a video for him and his new wife and panned around so we could all clap and cheer them on their wedding day … and I saw the video on their website. So that was cool too!

Bon Jovi was fab …. And I swear if I only had a hairbrush to sing into, it would have been my teenage years all over again! He sang all the favourites like Bad Medicine, Wanted Dead or Alive, Livin’ on a Prayer etc. Really fun night! And as we left we walked past the Atomium lit up – really pretty (I want to live in one of the pods!)

All in all, it was a fun, fun, fun, fun and fabulous weekend. I swear despite living in the Northern Hemisphere for seven years, I can’t shake my Australian upbringing because despite this being a European / British summer (and if you live here you KNOW how unpredictable it is) I was optimistic enough to bring flip flops and cut off jeans! Next time, even if it’s in the middle of a heat wave, I am packing a bit of everything including Eskimo furs! LOL!

And that's because there WILL be another time!!! Marleen was a really great host!

With every fibre of my being, I love ....

"Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination."
-- Oscar Wilde

I thought it would be fun to list some of the things I love - some are actual items and others are experiences.....

In no particular order:

The "Bestseller" and "Wolfheart" Chapter Charms made and sold by my friend Gena. To say I love them is a huge understatement!

My family.

.... and my cat!

.. and not forgetting my friends!

Sky+ ... even better than sliced bread!

My HoMedics SoundSpa given to me by my friend Jo.... "rain" is my favourite.
.... not to mention real rain on a tin roof or lashing against my windows.

The "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer.

The beach / coast at winter.

Reading (fullstop).

Colony Candles - scents Clean Caress or Summer Rain.

Browsing in "Borders"...
.... followed by buying BRAND NEW books (drool..... thud!)

My Senseo Coffee Machine and Senseo Paris coffee pods.

Visiting new towns, cities, places and countries.

Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent

The U.S.A. ... visiting it, exploring it and shopping in it.

Country Music.

That moment just before I fall asleep.

Flickr.

Amazon Wish Lists.

Chocolate .... there's no point in denying it!

I'll add more as I think of them....

Garden Spells...

You know how some people have a green thumb .... well I'm not one of those!!! More like BLACK thumb! But I do like having a nice garden.

After a cold, wet winter where I just saw my garden get more and more overgrown, I took advantage of a few days off and TACKLED the weeds with gusto. It still needs some tweaking and even more weeding but it's looking much better.

The view from my patio doors
Looking back from the garden gate.
(You can see my neighbours' houses)

I finally put up the cute sign I bought in Minnesota airport.
(That has to be Beware of Dog!)

I love roses and have four rose bushes in my back garden.
I also love Poppies! They keep coming up year after year!

Sarah Addison Allen

They say never judge a book by its cover but I read this book because of it's cover (that and combined with the author being from North Carolina where I recently visited).

It's the story of sisters, of coming home, facing demons, accepting yourself, all mixed in with a little magic. The characters, namely: Claire, Sydney, Bay, Evanelle, Tyler and Henry are more than likeable, they are lovable! I enjoyed getting to know each character and their journey through the book.

I cannot wait for The Sugar Queen to be released here in England .....

More favourite Twilight-themed pictures

I cannot wait for this movie!!!!

Duelling Bears

Beware .... the following images show carnage on a scale I've not seen before.

Marshall vs. the teddy bears.....

Every day Marshall, my cat, does battle with various teddy bears around my house. I wake up or come home to find teddies strewn over my house. He has now taken to bringing them to me (just drops them at my feet, miaows once and wanders off). It's hilarious!
